4 Foods to Avoid When Fighting Acne
Adult acne can be caused by a number of different factors from the usual suspects like hormones and stress to the less likely aggravators like medicine and makeup brushes. While some acne triggers are difficult to avoid, there are ways to take control. One way is with your diet.
“A lot of people don’t realize that it’s what they are eating that is causing their acne,” says Crystal Wellman, aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic. “By changing a few foods that you eat, you can hydrate and improve your skin while avoiding breakouts,” she says.
Here are four foods to avoid when fighting acne:
Too much sodium intake can dehydrate your skin, leading to swelling. This can make it more difficult for skin to heal from a breakout. To cut out hidden salt in your diet, make sure to wash all canned food like beans and vegetables, and avoid anything with added salt.
Bread and Refined Grains
Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar, causing a burst of hormone insulin, which leads to an increase in breakouts. For a healthy carbohydrate alternative, choose brown rice, which is rich in vitamin B, a known stress-fighting and hormone level–regulating vitamin.
Fat-free milk contains bioavailable hormones, which can lead to breakouts for some. Instead, try almond milk—it contains 50 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E, which contains antioxidants that are great for the health of your skin.
There is no getting around it, alcohol dehydrates your skin, which highlights wrinkles and prevents skin from healing. To make it worse, adding sugary cranberry juice or other sweeteners to the cocktail creates a nightmare for your skin. If you’re going to consume alcohol, drink it straight so there are no additives, and nurse it throughout the evening.
