Yes, You Can Wear Orange Makeup
By NewBeauty Editors |
Some of the prettiest makeup trends can sometimes be intimidating and seem unwearable for everyday life, or be bypassed altogether if you don’t know how to wear the color. With the help of some expert makeup artists, we got the lowdown on the right way to wear bright colors on your eyes, checks and lips.
Orange On The Eyes
When wearing orange on the eyes, decide where you are going to put the color: on the lid as shadow or swiped along the base of the lid as liner. “If you wear it as eye shadow, keep the color limited to one part of your eyes. Orange eye shadow acts as a stand-alone color and looks best when worn on the lid or in the crease. If you wear it in the crease, slightly bring the color up above the crease so you can see it when you open your eyes,” says Lidia Debaise, Stila Cosmetics sales and artistry executive. Dark brown shadow in the V of the eyelid is recommended for dimension.

Always apply eyeliner after you put on eye shadow to make the liner appear sharper.
Orange On The Cheeks
Just because your skin is a bit on the lighter side, doesn’t mean you can’t pull off a punchy shade of orange on your cheeks. The trick is to find the right shade. “Orange tones with coral or peachy pink tones flatter all skin colors,” says founder of Carmindy & Co. Carmindy. “Make sure the formula is sheer and applied just to the apples of the cheeks for a flush of color.” For added definition, use bronzer along the hairline, jawline and in the hollows of the cheeks.
For a Healthy Glow: Make Up For Ever HD Blush in Tangerine 515 melts into skin without the streaking that’s common of cream blushes. The color is rich, but doesn’t overpower the cheeks. Instead, it creates a natural-looking flush with a hint of orange. $26, sephora.com
Bright colors should be worn on top of a base or primer, which allows for the color to grab and makes it pop. “If you apply shadow to bare lids, you run the risk of it smearing or the color picking up imperfections,” says Carmindy.
Orange On The Lips
Bright orange on the lips deserves to be paired with neutral makeup, think a nude classic eye and cheek, which will best complement the lips. Both matte and sheer formulas work well on the lips with this shade—go with matte for a more dramatic look; sheer is better suited when you just want a hint of color. “Always make sure to apply a lip color that has a formula that dries down with a brush so it sets into the lips and doesn’t bleed into the surrounding area,” says Debaise.
Budge-Proof Color: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Carina leaves the lips with a semimatte finish. The bold color stays put for up to six hours so you don’t have to worry about reapplying anytime soon. $22, stilacosmetics.com
When wearing bold color on the eyes, always pair it with black mascara or black liquid liner. “It gives a cool contrast,” Carmindy explains.
