A Day in the Life of Celebrity Makeup Artist Pati Dubroff
By Nicole Wieder, Editorial Assistant |
What time do you wake up?
I'm an early bird. I like to be the first one up in my house. I usually wake between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m.
What's your morning routine?
When I wake up I first do "oil pulling". Then I then do my Egoscue Method Series of postures to get my alignment set for the day. My husband makes Chai, which I'm addicted to and can't leave my house without. After, I dry brush my body to stimulate my lymphatic system. By this point I slather on whichever facial serum and moisturizer I look at first—I have quite a few to choose from—and throw on whatever is appropriate for the day. If I'm not working I usually keep my workout gear on but If I'm working it’s usually jeans, or a little dress in the summer.
Which products do you use everyday?
I like to mix up products so I never use the same thing everyday. The items in heavy rotation are: Bioderma Sensibio H2O makeup remover, Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, Dr. Lancer The Method: Cleanse, The Method: Nourish and The Method: Polish, Joanna Vargas Daily Serum, Sjal Saphir Concentrate Anti-Aging Face Oil, Sisley Emulsion Ecologique, Dr. Hauschka Tinted Day Cream, La Mer The Body Crème, Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream, In Fiore Bois De Rose Body Balm, Pantene shampoos and conditioners, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant and body wash from Clarins.
What do you eat/drink for breakfast?
Chai and a piece of fruit. If I'm staying home I will make poached eggs or hot quinoa cereal. If I'm heading to work I will eat there, which usually is eggs or oatmeal. If I’m on a fresh juice kick, I start day with a green juice.
Describe a typical day at work
Workdays are never typical. Some days I'm in the studio all day, or I'm at a hotel for a press junket, and others, I may start at 6:00 p.m. to get a client ready for an evening event. Other days I'm traveling on a press tour and am waking up in a different city each morning. Then some days are spent at home doing interviews via email and phone, or editing products for a new launch. I love that there is no regularity so I never get bored.
What do you do after work?
I hang out with my husband and daughter or try to catch up with my friends. Sometimes I like going for an evening stroll. For dinner, I eat really healthy. I won’t eat wheat, dairy or processed foods and eat with very little oil. I keep dinner very simple. I like to go to bed on the early side, so ideally I’m sleeping by 10:00 p.m. I’m a big bath person so I always end my day with an Epson Salt bath in which I've added essential oils. After, I slather myself head-to-toe in moisturizer, body oils, foot, hand and cuticle creams.
Any new products you're excited about?
I am obsessed with Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream. The first time I used it on myself I literally did a double take when I saw how it blurred and evened out my skin. What I love most is it’s truly hydrating (packed with shea, mango and cocoa butters) and that it is affordable and available for everyone making it a win-win.
Are there any interesting/surprising things in your beauty routine?
Oil pulling. This ayurvedic ritual involves swishing sesame oil in the mouth for at least 15 minutes first thing in the morning. It pulls out toxins and is supposed to release inflammation. I have noticed a huge improvement in my health since doing this. I have less congestion and feel more clear.
What would our readers be surprised to know about you?
I only wear makeup if I have to. Most days I don’t wear a stitch, not even mascara. When I do wear makeup I always think "I should do this more often, it makes such a difference!"
