How to Get a White Wedding Smile

Teeth whitening is the most-requested cosmetic dental service and wedding parties are known to take advantage of the smile-brightening procedure. In-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments are both popular options offered at dentists’ offices. What sets these options apart from over-the-counter solutions is that a cosmetic dentist can help choose the right shade for your smile.

“Tooth colors need to be in harmony with the skin tone and whites of the eyes,” says Saint Paul, MN cosmetic dentist Frank Milnar, DDS. “Hollywood white smiles can be distracting because you tend to look only at a person’s teeth and not at their whole face.” In-office whitening can brighten up to 10 shades in around one hour.

According to Dr. Milnar, chomping on fibrous foods (like apples, celery and broocoli) can complement your teeth whitening by naturally exfoliating the teeth and loosening stains.

But whitening your teeth is only half the battle. Getting your smile right in photographs is another challenge. Lifestyle photographer Dale Stenbroten shares these tips for getting your best photo on your wedding day:

  • Moisten your lips and teeth to make smiles appear even brighter
  • Females in the wedding party should consider bright lipstick, which can also make teeth look whiter
  • Practice smiling in a mirror and take some practice photos before the big day. Just take a digital camera with your friends, and measure and experiment with angles. See which angle suits you best.
