Three Makeup Artists Share Three Valentine’s Day Looks
By Marissa Hicken |
“Valentine’s Day is a holiday where you should feel sexy, confident and womanly," says Dimitri James, the man behind Skinn Cosmetics. We couldn’t agree more. So, we spoke to three makeup artists for their tips on the right look for any kind of Valentine’s Day date whether it’s online, with your girlfriends or your Valentine.
A Romantic Dinner Date
According to James, the perfect pairing for a romantic date night: smoky eyes and red lips. First apply a smoky gray all over your lid, wrapping down and around your lower lash line. Then apply a darker smoky shade of gray or charcoal through the crease. Follow with an ivory shadow under the brow bone. For the wow factor, line your entire lash line and inner tear line with Skinn Cleopatra Black Smudge Stick ($15). For a sexy cat-eye look, apply individual fake lashes to outer corners, adding a healthy coat of mascara. Go all out on the red lipstick, James suggests. “This year we are seeing heavier eyes accompanied by luscious lips, so don’t be shy!”
A Long-Distance Virtual Date
Just because your significant other isn’t close by doesn’t mean you should be in pajamas with messy hair on Valentine’s Day. Being miles apart doesn’t mean you can’t spend a romantic night together. Video chatting on Skype or other services can allow you to virtually share dinner and drinks or even watch a movie together.
But looking good on camera is tricky. That’s why celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff, offers these tips for looking your best on video calls:
1. First and foremost, find good lighting and a nice background
2. Prep the skin: for those with oily skin, go for a matte primer, and for dry skin, try a radiant primer or tinted moisturizer
3. Brighten under the eyes and spot conceal where needed
4. For romantic eyes, use a deep-colored eye pencil and smudge at lash line
5. Curl lashes and apply multiple coats of mascara
A Night Out With the Girls
Even if you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your girlfriends, there’s no reason not to embrace the love in the air. Pretty pink lips look good on every skin tone and every age says celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. And what better day to sport a pretty pink pout than Valentine’s? But before you choose your favorite shade, make sure to exfoliate your lips with a product like Mally Beauty Perfect Prep Lip System ($35) so they look and feel soft and allow for a smoother application and wear.
