The Dos and Don’ts of Winter Skin

By now, you’ve probably noticed the effects of winter weather on your skin. Bitter cold and biting winds outside and the dry heat and lack of humidity inside all affect the way your skin, lips and nails look and feel. But San Diego dermatologist Tess Mauricio says we can prevent the harsh effects of winter on our skin by following her list of dos and don’ts:
Do: Keep wearing your sunscreen. UVA rays, which cause fine lines and wrinkles, stay the same all day, every day, so make sure you are protecting your skin.
Don’t: Take long hot showers and baths. Try to keep shower time to a minimum, and at a moderate temperature. The hot steam causes pores to open and release much-needed moisture, causing dry skin.
Do: Re-check your skin regimen. Just as you change clothes with the season, you have to change your skin-care routine to make sure your skin is receiving the proper nutrients.
Don’t: Vigorously rub your body with a towel when you get out of the shower. You will remove the skin cells and oils you have just applied. Instead, pat-dry or air-dry if possible when you get out of the shower.
Do: Drink water to stay hydrated. The more hydrated you keep your body, the more hydrated your skin will be as well.
Don’t: Wear itchy clothing. The constant itch can worsen your dry-skin issues.
Do: Use a body lotion and/or hand cream. Constantly nourishing your skin with lotion will help relieve itchiness and keep your skin hydrated.
Don’t: Lick your lips! It makes the chapping of your lips worse.
Do: Carry chapstick on you at all times. Throw one in your purse, car, or keep one on your nightstand. Your lips have a higher tendency of becoming chapped in winter, so it is good to always have some on you.
