Insider Hair-Color Hints

Kristina Barricelli knows color. As the owner of New York’s Gemini14 Salon and the expert behind the hair color of celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens, Barricelli knows just what it takes to get hair looking shiny and healthy. Read on for her main mantras when it comes to getting your most beautiful hair color:
Choosing a hair color has more to do with your current shade than the color written on the bottle. Kristina says that if you already have warmth in your hair and would like to make the color richer, you need a neutral tone. Many people would pick a warm tone but if your color already has warmth, the neutral color will bring out the rich undertones. If you have too many warm tones in your hair, counteract it with an ashy tone. If you have an ashy tone, add in panels of a warmer color. You cannot pick your color based off of the desired result without taking into consideration your current color and tones.
Once you have the perfect color, mainitaning it can be tricky. Not many people know that shampoo and conditioners create shine by penetrating the hair strand rather than coating the hair with silicone that weighs it down. Kristina says that hair products that rely on silicone coating actually create a blurry look. Instead, look for a product that treats hair on the inside in order to achieve high shine.
Want to figure out if your shampoo and conditioner are penetrating or coating your hair? Kristina says if hair feels buttery the first couple of seconds after you’ve applied it, then you are using a high silicone product that is only coating your hair. Some people think that by layering the product they will get more shine but you actually get the reversed effect. The layering continues to coat the hair giving it a blurred, lackluster effect.
Kristina recommends the TouchBack Plus Shampoos to her clients that have a foam application because they provide even distribution. Not only do they penetrate, but also, the foam dispenser helps spread the product evenly throughout the hair so it can absorb equally into each hair follicle. Good conditioners without silicone take a few minutes to work (make sure to leave in for three to five minutes) but ultimately get you the high shine you’re after. To ensure her clients’ color remains vibrant after they leave her salon, Kristina recommends the TouchBack Plus Color Systems (which come in 8 shades) to renew the hue with temporary hair color for optimum fade protection between color treatments.
