Anne Hathaway's Les Misérables Makeover
When you're a famous actress, you have the means to work with world-class hairdressers, makeup artists, fitness trainers and nutritionists in an effort to always look gorgeous for the camera. Which makes it so jarring to see a movie star like Anne Hathaway, who we typically regard as one of the most beautiful women in the world, turn into a starving, nearly bald prostitute in her latest movie.
For her transformation into the character Fantine for the movie version of Les Misérables, Anne had to put all her typical beauty practices on hold. Since her character is forced to sell her beautiful long hair to provide for her daughter Cosette in the film, Anne had to have half her hair cut off on camera by another actress—who "is a wonderful actress, but … not a hairdresser," the star said in a recent interview.
When her real hairstylist, Paul Gooch, was told to finish up the cut job, he was given specific orders to make the hairstyle look like a "butcher" job, or "nasty" as Anne says. She was reportedly inconsolable after the cut, but knows it was worth it.
Anne also had to drastically thin down her toned body for the role of Fantine. To do so, she had to follow a strict diet which consisted of, wait for it…dried oatmeal paste. She lost 25 pounds for the role as the "idea was to look near death," she says.
This drastic makeover is obviously not recommended for anyone off screen. Luckily since the film wrapped, we have seen her blossom back to her former self—complete with an adorable pixie haircut and some color back in her face. Phew.
