How To Get Your Perfect Hair Color
By Anna K. Fryxell |
There’s a lot more that goes into choosing a hair color than just saying blonde, red or brunette. Colorists actually consider all aspects of the client from their personality to their lifestyle to their physical characteristics to find the perfect shade that works for them. Here's a little insight into what goes into the decision before that dye ever touches your head:
Lake Mary, FL, celebrity colorist Sherry Ratay says there are three ways to describe a person’s hair color—it screams, it talks or it whispers. When a hair color “screams,” it’s usually a bright vivid color, like red or dramatic like the ombré style. A hair color that “talks” is usually a basic color with a few stand out pieces running through it. And hair color that “whispers,” like Kate Middleton’s, is very natural looking and doesn’t overpower the person.
Eye color is also an important factor that goes into determining the perfect shade. “Take a look in the mirror and notice the coloring around your iris, if you have amber flecks surrounding your iris, go for warmer tones,” says Ratay. “If there are no flecks and you are a natural dark blonde or lighter, I would suggest going for a beachy pastel blonde.”
A person’s lifestyle also plays a huge factor on the hair color they should get, says Los Angeles colorist and owner of The Román Salon Sheri Román. If you can’t keep up with the maintenance then you shouldn’t go for colors that need constant attention such as red shades. She also says, “You can really tell someone’s level of confidence based on their color selection. Hair color is often an emotional decision, sometimes someone has had something dramatic happen and then want a dramatic change in their color.” People can be either adventurous or conservative when it comes to their hair color.
To get the best results, Roman says to bring in as many pictures as possible such as ones where you really liked your color, ones where you didn’t and how you want your color to look. She also says never to book the color appointment on the same day as the consultation. “Go home and think about it and don’t be impulsive.”
