Cameron Diaz is the epitome of a bombshell, but as you can see, she hasn’t always been the belle of the blonde ball. Over the years she has battled problem skin, and some serious roots. Today, on the brink of her 40th birthday, Cameron looks better than ever and to find out exactly how she has transformed herself over the years, we caught up with the team that keeps her beautiful. Here is what they had to say:

The fight against blemished skin
It’s no secret that Cameron’s acneic complexion has been a constant issue for the star and therefore she has gone to great lengths to give it diligent care. “She’s conscious of it and goes to great measures to handle and correct it,” says her aesthetician, Christopher Watt. Besides acne, “uneven skin tone, sun damage and hyperpigmentation are issues that also plague her complexion,” he says. “I regularly do microdermabrasion on her, with a lactic acid peel. And she likes oxygen facials, too. I also put her under a blue LED light to lessen breakouts and do microcurrent work to tighten and tone.”

Natural-looking highlights
Cameron’s colorist, Redken Creative Consultant for Color, Tracey Cunningham, achieves her beachy blond look with highlights, and touches them up every month or so. “She is a natural blonde, so she has a beautiful base to start with.” When doing highlights like hers, Cunningham says it is important to keep them natural looking and not stripey. “It should appear as if there was no work done at all,” she says, adding that the actress’ sun-kissed skin and piercing blue eyes allow her to transition from dark to light hair easily without getting washed out.

Glowing, bronzed skin
To preserve the integrity of her skin while giving it a beautiful bronzed glow, Cameron indulges in Ona Spa’s Ona Tan ($65). An organic customized airbursh-tan treatment (it doesn’t leave skin sticky or orange, and dries in a flash), she opts for it regularly.

Workouts for a toned body
Cameron’s toned body may be partially due to good genes and her love of outdoor activities, like surfing, but her trainer, Teddy Bass, says that achieving a body like hers can be done with high-intensity workouts that involve circuits that alternate between upper and lower body, plyometric exercises and planks and ab crunches.
