Washing your skin is an important step to clean off all the grime, sebum and natural oils that gather on your skin throughout the day. But depending on your environment and other factors, some people feel the need to wash their face more than others do.

But even if you have really oily skin, most experts suggest not to over do it. “If the skin is cleansed more than twice a day, the natural oils will be stripped away. When that happens, more oil is produced to compensate for the dry feeling, which leads to more bacteria production,” says celebrity aesthetician Terri Lawton.

New York dermatologist, Gervaise Gerstner, MD, says it’s only really necessary to wash your face with a cleanser once a day. “The more times you wash it the drier your skin will get,” he says. You especially don’t want to over-cleanse your skin if you’re on an acne routine that contains retinol.

If you do have oily skin, or are prone to breakouts, and want to wash your face in the morning, simply rinse it with water and pat it dry. As for actual cleansers, Dr. Gerstner suggests alternating between an acne cleanser with salicylic acid and a gentle, creamy cleanser.

The next step after cleansing your skin should be to apply whatever acne treatment you use, such as retin A or Differin. For an added boost, try a glycolic acid treatment about three times a week on newly washed skin. After this step, apply a moisturizer or serum.
