Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane or Juvéderm, can restore youthful volume and tone when injected into the facial skin. But for those who shy away from needles, scientists have a found a way to make it effective when applied topically to the surface of the skin-without the need for injections.

Because hyaluronic acid particles are typically too large to absorb into the skin, scientists applied nanotechnology to assist the hyaluronic acid in making its way through the dermis. The Ionic Nano Particle Technology appeared to be the key in helping the product penetrate the skin.

In a University of California, Los Angeles study of the nanotechnology, 100 percent of the subjects found improvement in skin smoothness after 120 days, and 100 percent of them also said their skin was well hydrated. The skin’s texture, hydration and elasticity continued to improve 90 days after the study, hinting to the fact that improve collagen production had occurred for the patients.

While the study focused on women with photo-damaged skin, the researchers believed the nanotechnology-hyaluronic acid pairing may also be effective for acne, rosacea, psoriasis and other skin ailments.
