Cal-A-Vie: My One-Week Body Transformation

I recently experienced what I can only call a blissful passage into a healthy fat-burning lifestyle. The bad news? I only got to indulge in this transformative experience for a few short days. Nestled on a hilltop outside of San Diego, the destination spa Cal-a-Vie is a truly unique place that will lovingly push you to make the right food and exercise choices, with the end goal being a slimmer, healthier you.

I arrived on a uniquely cold and rainy Sunday and was welcomed by the warm and friendly staff (a five-to-one staff to guest ratio). While the grounds are extensive, the guests that enjoy the Provincial countryside-like surroundings are few. My group consisted of 15 people, the average being about 30. The focus is on changing the body in the space of one week, on the inside and out. A guest can lose between five to eight pounds, as well as body fat, and inches. Look at it as a luxury camp for adults.

Days begin early if you choose to join in on the 5:30 a.m. hikes around the property. It was too cold and rainy for me, but I hear that I missed out on a fabulous experience, as I learned at the intimate morning breakfast. The petite menu of breakfast options was fabulous, and while I was enjoying the coffee and mushroom omelet, my customized days itinerary was handed out.

With five classes being offered every hour, the variety of workouts is not only an education in new techniques but also allows for extremely small classes (sometimes only one or two people), which basically nets out to a private training session. From core stability ball classes, to TRX and deep water exercising, the options were as stimulating as they were unique. And I stress to you, I am not a fitness person. I hate the gym, and rarely, if ever, work out, but I found myself running from class to class with the excitement and enthusiasm of an inveterate athlete. I could feel my muscles changing-the fat melting away.

At lunch and dinner, the meal portions that the chef and staff so lovingly created, (unprocessed whole grains, lean proteins and essential fatty acids; no sugar, butter, cream or deep-frying techniques are used) left me guilt-free and surprisingly fulfilled. So while I thought I was going to a spa to only indulge in decadent body treatments (of which I did experience), I left lighter, recharged and re-committed to taking care of myself.

I can't wait to go back.
