Kourtney Kardashian recently came under fire for dying her hair with a bun in the oven. While she assured the public that she took every precaution out there to ensure the safety of her child, we were still a little skeptical that it was safe to do at all. That’s why we reached out to L’Oréal Professionnel Portfolio Artist, Kaz Amor, for answers.

It turns out, the most important step you should take before undergoing any beauty treatment while pregnant is to consult your doctor first. “It really depends on the type of pregnancy and risk factors,” says Amor. This rule should be followed even if you’re just trying to get pregnant or are breast feeding at the moment.

When you are already expecting, go for color treatments that don’t touch your scalp, like highlights or balayage. This is just another reason to never dye your hair at home. “Professional colorists know how to stay away from the scalp with dyes, so it is probably best to go into a salon for your color rather than do at home.” If you want to use dyes that will touch your scalp, it’s extremely important to consult your doctor.

“When you are pregnant, it’s a great time to switch to a non-ammonia color like L’Oréal Professionnel’s new INOA color, as it has no odor and is gentler on the hair.” You should also steer clear of dying your hair red, as it’s known to be the most carcinogenic color. Another tip, be sure to dye your hair in a well-ventilated area.

So it turns out that coloring your hair while pregnant is definitely an option. But it’s important to make sure you’re taking all the proper precautions to ensure the safety of your baby and yourself.
