Dye Your Hair At Home Or At A Salon?

It’s hard enough to choose which color you want to dye your hair, even if you’re not making a drastic color change. But another big decision you have to consider is whether to D-I-Y at home or get a professional to do it at a salon. That’s why we asked Los Angeles, CA, hairstylist Liliana Sanchez of the Kriza Aveda Salon for advice.

She says, if done right, using a boxed hair dye can look just like you did it at the salon. But, if done wrong, Sanchez says the color can look uneven. That’s because the dye will grab onto some hairs, but miss some of the others. What’s more, boxed dyes tend to contain harsh chemicals, especially if they’re permanent.

Plus, if you ever decide to opt for professional color at a salon after you’ve already dyed your hair at home, you create more work for your colorist and more stress for your hair. For major at-home mess-ups, the colorist has to use harsh chemicals to strip the color before she can fix it. Once stripped, your hair is fragile and more prone to damage.

If you’re concerned that professional-grade dyes at salons may be too harsh, consider visiting an Aveda salon. “Aveda’s colors contain conditioning oils like sunflower, jojoba, and castor,” says Sanchez. “This leaves the hair feeling silky, whereas other colors can leave the hair feeling dry. It makes a difference.”
