Ask An Expert: Get Rid Of Those Stubborn Scars
By Anna K. Fryxell |
Many think of scars as a sign that you've lived your life-each one has a different story. But it's understandable to want to reduce their appearance or get rid of them all together. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done because scars can be extremely stubborn. That's why for this week's Ask an Expert post, we went to Las Vegas, NV, dermatologist Curt Samlaska, MD, for advice.
On Facebook, Kar asks, What is the best way to fade scars on legs?
“Scars in certain regions of the body are harder to deal with than others,” says Dr. Samlaska. “The face heals well and scars are typically minimal. But extremities are harder to treat, and you're more likely to scar in those regions.”
He recommends using an erbium laser because they can improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars by 50 percent. For keloidal scars, the ones that appear hard, rubbery, and shiny, Dr. Samlaska recommends a steroid injection to break them down.
If you're going under the knife, it's important to choose a good doctor to minimalize scarring. “If you're having a surgical procedure, the amount of scarring depends on the location of the incision and how well it closed. If it's done well, it'll look like a wrinkle.”
We hope these answers help! Keep sending us those questions on Facebook and Twitter, and we'll keep getting you expert advice.
