This Pedicure Gets Even More Fishy
By Shellie Terry Benson |
A few years ago fish pedicures, during which tiny garra rufa fish eat away the dead skin on your feet when you plunge them into their tank, made a big splash as an alternative to scraping away callouses with unsanitary razors. Some US cities have banned the fish-munching procedures, and perhaps for good reason.
Britain's Health Protection Agency issued a warning this week that the fish pedicures may actually play a role in spreading HIV and hepatitis C. If the water in the fish tanks goes unchanged between salon guests, infections may linger. The fish themselves may even carry the bacteria.
By our lights, this treatment already sounded pretty fishy. Would you ever consider it?
