Easy Ways To Prevent Breast Cancer
By Shellie Terry Benson |
This month we've been bringing you a variety of breast cancer awareness tips, news stories and products that support the cause. And we also want to give you tips to prevent the frightening disease in the first place. Here are some of the proven ways you can help reduce your risk:
Exercise. It doesn't take a lot-only four hours of walking each week (that's about 30 minutes a day) reduced the risk for postmenopausal women by 20 percent, according to the government's Women's Health Initiative study.
Make better diet decisions. The Women's Health Initiative suggests an overall healthy diet with daily calcium and olive and fish oils. Cut back on saturated fat (that is solid at room temperature) and avoid alcohol. Eat lots of nutrient-rich produce like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, berries, garlic, mushrooms, nuts, tomatoes and sweet potatoes.
Paired together, these will greatly help you maintain a healthy weight, which is another important element in preventing breast cancer. If you've gained 21 to 30 pounds since high school, you're 40 percent more likely to develop breast cancer. If you've gained more than 70 pounds, you're risk goes up to 50 percent.
