Learn To Read Labels

Do you check out the labels on what you're eating? Even if you do, do you really know what to look for?

With all the products out there claiming to be low-fat, non-fat, organic, all-natural or preservative-free, we often neglect some of the basics when making “healthy” food choices. Celebrity nutritionist Paula Simpson shared with us some of her pointers on what to look for to be certain that the foods you consume are truly healthy. “The first place I steer my clients to is understanding the labels and ingredients,” she says. Keep these questions in mind the next time you're checking out a label:

• What's the actual serving size?
• Look at the ingredient list, which is listed in descending order-what are the first few ingredients?
• How many carbohydrates are included? What is the ratio of simple carbohydrates (sugars) to fiber? Does the product contain high fructose corn syrup?
• What is the total fat? Are there any healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids?
