The solution may lie in antioxidant spices like turmeric and cinnamon, according to new research from Penn State. Published in the Journal of Nutrition, the study found that antioxidant spices might be able to counteract some of the harm of eating meals that are high in fat.
The researchers conducted a study on six overweight men between the ages of 30 and 65, feeding them a meal and drawing their blood every 30 minutes for three hours, on two separate days. The meals were identical on both days except on one of the days the meals were laced with two tablespoons of antioxidant-rich spices including rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, cloves, garlic powder and paprika.
Adding the spices to the fatty meal reduced triglyceride responses by approximately 30 percent. The researchers plan to investigate if they can get similar results with smaller doses of spices.
