What Causes Dry Skin?
By NewBeauty Editors |
Skin is comprised of water, ceramides, proteins and lipids that exist in perfect balance. When this balance is properly maintained, nutrients and water reach all the layers.
Water originates within the dermal layers and makes its way toward the surface to hydrate the other skin cells; but when water comes into contact with air, it evaporates, causing dryness in the skin.
Other reasons for dry skin include genetic tendencies, irritants, certain dermatological procedures, inflammation, sunburn, medication, weather, and skin conditions like eczema. Furthermore, products that are too drying, drastic changes in pH levels, and over-washing can all disrupt skin's moisture balance.
Experts recommend moisturizers with active ingredients such as retinol to stimulate cellular activity while providing hydration in order to prevent skin from becoming weak.
