Should You Stop Using Moisturizer?

Some experts believe that regular moisturizing can wreak havoc on your skin, instigating issues like acne and premature aging. Traditional moisturizers can occlude your skin with water, oil, waxes and emulsifiers, fooling it into thinking it's moisturized and preventing it from creating natural moisture.

Moisturizer can potentially clog your pores, especially if it's too rich, leading to blemishes and breakouts. Vegetable and mineral oils often clog pores by sitting on the surface of the skin, and water-soluble, vitamin-packed moisturizers can oxidize or become rancid, which may prompt breakouts.

Moisturizers can also disrupt the natural barrier function of the skin, blocking its ability to produce a healthy amount of sebum. When the skin doesn't produce enough oil, it can look dull and dry because hydration is not stemming from within.

Ingredients like mineral oil, oxybenzone and benzophenone are believed to contribute to skin aging. When moisturizers with these ingredients are routinely applied and cellular activity decreases, aging becomes more evident and anti-aging ingredients are unable to be properly absorbed because cells have been damaged.

A large number of experts still believe moisturizers are necessary for maintaining healthy skin, so look for topical products that use ingredients like essential fatty acids, ceramides, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and squalene to encourage cellular repair. Furthermore, you should use a lighter formula during the day and a heavier one at night.
