Which Bristles Are Best For Your Hair?

As a rule of thumb, the stiffer and closer the bristles on a brush, the more control you have over the hair. Most brushes contain either boar or nylon bristles, although other kinds, like plastic, can be mixed in.

Here's a guide to which bristles do what.

NYLON
Available as soft, for fine hair, or stiff, for thick and curly hair, nylon bristles are better for brushing than styling. Using them with heat can melt them.

BOAR
Boar bristles add shine by redistributing oils. Experts recommend this kind of brush for when you're trying to straighten your hair because it won't affect body and you can retain shine and control.

PLASTIC
Like nylon bristles, plastic bristles can be used alone or as a filler. They work best on wet hair.

As for shape, most experts agree that small, round brushes are best suited for shorter hairstyles and paddle brushes are best for longer hair. Rounded brushes are a better option when you want to add volume.
