What Causes Hair To Turn Gray?

While genes play a role, hair tends to turn gray because of a lack of pigment in the strand. "A natural and normal part of the aging process, gray hairs arise when the pigment cells in the root of the hair produce less pigment than before," explains Maryland dermatologist Yardy Tse, MD.

Hair will not completely turn gray overnight. It can take up to 10 years. "Most women start seeing gray hair as early as their 20s and 30s," says Dr. Tse, "although some women don't turn gray until their 60s."

If you aren't willing to go with the natural progression of your hair color, take into consideration the level of maintenance that you are willing to commit to.
