Celeb-Inspired Hair-Color Techniques
By Joel Warren, Co-owner of the Warren-Tricomi salons |
“Just as there are many techniques in art, there are different techniques a colorist uses when highlighting the hair,” explains celebrity colorist Joel Warren, co-owner of the Warren-Tricomi salons. “I use one or more techniques with every client I color depending on the results they wish to achieve and what I believe best suits her style and her hair.”
The following five techniques are employed by Joel when he highlights the hair of his clients:
Think: Jessica Alba
What it is: Ideal for brunettes and natural blondes, this technique replicates the natural way sun exposure lightens the hair. It requires the least amount of upkeep because the highlights are very spread out from foil to foil using a very fine “weave” pattern throughout the head.
Think: Jennifer Aniston
What it is: Most traditional highlighting services incorporate this technique which requires foils placed closely together around the whole head, including the underneath of the hair. This technique can be used on women with any hair color and is often used to apply lowlights as well.
Think: Elizabeth Hurley
What it is: This technique is used in order to create high contrasts of color that do not blend together. It usually requires quite a bit of upkeep as roots start to show within just a couple of weeks.
Think: Cyndi Lauper in the '80s
What it is: Large chunks of super contrasting color are placed in one or more sections of the hair. It's very extreme but also very unique and head-turning.
What it is: Perhaps Joel's favorite technique is Freelance, during which he uses two or more of the above techniques on one client. The techniques are usually determined by the shape of a client's haircut.
