Bringing Sexy Backs
By Shellie Terry Benson |
We saw a lot of daring, backless dresses on this year's Golden Globes red carpet, and we're hoping for more throughout the awards season like actress Claire Danes' stunning J. Mendel gown. But to pull off a look like this, you can't overlook the muscle tone and skin texture of your back.
Fat has a tendency to hang around the back area (bra bulges, anyone?) and cause you to look lumpy, whether you're wearing a back-revealing frock or even your everyday clothes. The first line of defense is to get lots of cardiovascular exercise to burn fat from head-to-toe. Try mixing in the rowing machine with your usual cardio to get a great combo of heart-pumping work and toning for your back, abs and arms.
Add strength-training moves such as bent-over rows, lateral pulldowns and hyper-extensions (ask a trainer for form tips before you try it) and you'll get great toning for every area.
If your back fat is resistant, but your skin is in good shape and has a lot of elastin, talk to your plastic surgeon about liposuction to get rid of those last few pockets of fat.
Also, don't neglect the skin or your back. It can suffer the same dull tone as anywhere else. It can also get clogged with oil and dead skin, which can lead to blemishes. Regular exfoliation can help. It may be hard to reach, so ask your honey for some sloughing help...and maybe even return the favor.
