Jennifer Lopez Has Been Testing This Secret Makeup Launch for the Past Six Months and It Is Magic

If you didn’t think that J.Lo Glow could get any better, guess again.

Celeb makeup artist Scott Barnes—he’s the creative force behind the iconic “Glow” and a longtime staple in Lopez’s glam squad—just dropped a highly anticipated five-palette collection of in-sync color schemes: a luxe selection of blush, contour, highlighter and eyeshadow. 

His Muse: The one and only J.Lo, who was Barnes’ “test subject” pre-launch.

As Barnes told us, he got the idea for the collection after being frustrated knowing there were makeup artists without all the tools they needed. “After talking with my husband, Frank Galasso, I decided that I was going to launch with five palettes, not just one,” he says. 

“This was my big, secret project for a long time that took every ounce of strength to keep quiet. I decided Colour Bomb ($84) eyeshadow was going to have masterfully crafted placement and the finest colors that were actually usable for color lovers. Snatural ($84) eyeshadow was going to have sexy natural tones that are accessible to everyone. Sculpting and Contour ($58) was going to be a masterclass message to everyone on what what contouring colors should actually be. Chic Cheek ($58) blush was going to show how to create a blush palette with the proper yellow and pink hue shifts, and Glowy & Showy ($68) was my way of finally accomplishing proper and gorgeous translucence.”

Barnes used all five of the palettes on Lopez during the filming of the movie Hustlers, which he says required one or two looks minimum every day. Along the way, he made “a lot of final changes and small pigment adjustments after comparing colors with the naked eye and on camera.” He also mastered the almighty coveted step for real life: Managing to cut back on application time.

“I was able to achieve an efficiency that was essential,” he says. “That ‘J.Lo, ready-for-camera glow’ can take hours, but I got it to under an hour using my palettes. After all the years of testing my palettes with other formulas, and lighting tests on and off camera, and playing with layouts, I feel like I achieved something so incredibly useful that it just has to be experienced to understand the development brilliance behind it. They are truly in a class of their own. Jennifer and I slowly shifted away from other makeup and became totally reliant on these palettes sometime half way through the movie. They are workhorses, they are your makeup best friends, they are just everything!”

As for Lopez’s favorites, Barnes says some choices surprised him: “She made such fun and bold decisions. I think when you lay out five palettes in front of an artist like her, you instantly get a surge of electric creativity you wouldn't otherwise get. She really loves Colour Bomb, Snatural and the Sculpting and Contour Palettes.”
