Shortly after Cardi B announced she was canceling several performances due to plastic-surgery complications, the singer shared a photo of her swollen feet, below, to explain to her fans why she had no choice but to take some time off after her procedures.

“Look how swollen my feet get every time I take a plane,” she captioned her photo. “Imagine my body,” she adds. Later, she noted, “My stomach gets even more puffy,” and noted her feet and stomach “burn when I get puffed up.”

Cardi B is reportedly taking time off from her tour due to complications from her recent plastic surgery. However, unlike Aesha Curry’s instance, the surgeon isn’t at fault. Instead, the issues stem from not following proper postoperative protocol—and showcase why listening to your doctor about recovery time is critical after any treatment or procedure.

“Let me tell y’all something. I shouldn’t really be performing,” Cardi told the crowd at the Beale Street Music Festival earlier this month. (Days prior, she shared that, along with liposuction, she’d just gotten her “boobs redone” in an interview with ET.) “I should have canceled today because moving too much is gonna f**k up my lipo,” she shared at the Festival. Turns out, she was right. “I can’t even feel my body, s**t hurts,” she told fans on an Instagram Live from her bed. Now, the rapper is reportedly postponing some of her tour dates in order to properly recover.

Englewood, NJ plastic surgeon Shwetambara Parakh, MD says strenuous activities that raise heart rate and blood pressure—such as hours of performing—increase the chance of bleeding at the surgery site and should be avoided for at least two weeks. “If breast implants are placed underneath the pectorals major muscle, aka the bench press muscle, extensive use of the arms and chest should be avoided for a minimum of four to six weeks after surgery,” she adds. “A main risk of liposuction is persistent swelling and fluid accumulation in the area. Risk is minimized with appropriate rest and compression garments.”
