Real Housewife Tamra Judge Quits Popular Diet After It Made Her Sick
By Emily Rekstis |
Joining the long list of celebrities trying the Keto diet, Real Housewife of Orange County Tamra Judge started the low-carb, high-fat diet in August. However, it only lasted about a month before she had to give it up.
"I got sick," she told The Feast. "They say there’s a Keto flu you get, and I just fell off the wagon."

We talked to nutrition consultant, Amy Goodson, RD, who confirmed the Keto flu is something that can happen when an individual drastically changes their diet, especially a reduction in carbohydrates. "Individuals really don't get 'sick,' but are suffering from symptoms as a result of a major diet change," says Goodson. "Symptoms range from fatigue to headaches to poor concentration to irritability. Some even report nausea, constipation, weakness, difficulty sleeping and sugar cravings."
She notes that symptoms vary for different people depending on things like genetics, exercise level and carb intake previous to starting the new diet.
Even though this whole Keto flu thing was a major turn off, it wasn’t the only reason the reality star decided to quit the diet. Like many other skeptics, the high-fat component concerned her. "I’m sure it works, but I cannot wrap my brain around eating that much fat." She goes on to explain that she could technically eat bad fats like cheese, sour cream and butter as part of the diet but instead would try and substitute good fats like avocado to make up for the high fat part of it.
"It just doesn’t make any sense to me because it’s just not healthy eating," she told the online publication. "So I worry more about what it’s going do for, like, your heart, your cholesterol, and things like that."
After her long and thoughtful journey, she decided that the Keto diet simply cannot work, at least for her. "You have to put your body in Ketosis and if you don’t, then you’re just eating a s---load of calories," said Judge.
The Real Housewife isn’t the only one who’s decided against the Keto diet. It can be a difficult diet to start and even harder to maintain. "While the keto diet can help people lose weight, it can often be hard to maintain, leave you with little energy to exercise and removes the main sources of fiber in the diet," says Goodson. "For many, the benefit may not be worth it."
No matter what kind of diet you keep up, it’s important to find one that makes sense for you.
