Demi Lovato Says She’s Choosing Happiness Over Dieting

Demi Lovato wasn’t joking earlier this year when she said 2018 is the year she embraces her body. The 25-year-old singer spoke with PEOPLE about her body positive message and how putting on a little bit of weight doesn’t faze her—she's actually happier these days.

Between her performances on stage and her role as contributor to Kate Hudson’s Fabletics line, Lovato is often seen tight, body-conscious clothing. But as she shared with her social media fans earlier this year, she’s done with the stress associated with avoiding certain foods solely to attain a perfect body. “It’s a daily battle. Some days I feel great and some days I don’t feel great,” confessed the star. “I stopped dieting and have gained a little weight so it’s been a struggle but at the same time, I’m happier because I’m not restricting myself from certain foods and I’m no longer food shaming myself.”
Lovato remains physically active and is still very conscious of her health and wellness, but says she wanted to counteract the “diet culture” that is so prevalent in our society. “Every commercial on TV is either about a weight-loss pill or piece of fitness equipment or it’s all food-based,” she says.
With a fan base that includes impressionable young women, it’s an important message for someone with Lovato’s reach to share. “As someone recovering from a food disorder, it’s something that I want to put out there that you don’t have to diet in order to be happy. I don’t think I’ve heard that message out there in the public and of course, it’s important to be healthy and everything in moderation is fine.”
