Bayalage is nothing new when it comes to hair color, but reverse balayage? Not exactly something we see every day—until now, that is. It turns out the popular hair color technique is sweeping the Internet, but not in it’s traditional form. According to PopSugar,  this new “reverse balayage” look is seriously trending and we can’t help but be intrigued.

In a recent post on Reddit, user named DEH0001 uploaded an image of perfectly curled hair that starts off with golden blond strands near the crown of the head and transforms into much darker hair at the end. “In a world full of blonde balayage, be a reverse,” the redditor captioned the post, gathering quite a few responses from across the site. “As a natural blond who dyes her hair dark and hopes to grow out roots and not cave again, the hope that this trend comes back gives me life,” wrote on follower. “I love it!! I wonder how it looks straightened?” wrote another.

Typically, bayalage begins with subtle, natural-looking highlights that gradually get brighter as it’s painted along the hair. In this instance, however, the hair is its brightest shade of blond at the top, fading into a much darker hue along the ends, making it the exact inverse of the original technique.

Unsurprisingly, there’s already quite a few examples of this new technique swarming social media. If you’re interested in giving the look a try for yourself, check out two of our favorite looks for inspiration below:
