According to an interview with the NY Times, Pantone vice president Laurie Pressman says the saturated hue “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking," adding that “it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” but not to be confused with “what’s going on in our world today”—an interesting distinction.

Inspiration for this bold color was pulled from creative thinkers like Prince, as well as violet crystals from the wellness movement, the swirling purple shades within the cosmos, and possibly from politics as well. Eiseman says ultra violet is “the most complex of all colors because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed—blue and red—and brings them together to create something new."
Although Eiseman made no clear reference to politics, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton wore a bright violet lapel and blouse during her presidential run, which followers speculate could've had an influence on the inspiration behind the color choice because it has been a shade associated with unity and strength.
Clearly ultra violet is a powerful color that would not only look beautiful as a makeup shade, but also put forth vibes of power and creativity, no matter which way it’s worn.
