We are deep into breast cancer awareness month and we’ve had some really great news to celebrate this year. The American Cancer Society recently reported breast cancer mortality rates have decreased almost 40 percent since 1989, with more than 322,000 deaths being averted during the past 28 years. The report attributed the decline to improvements in treatments and early detection by mammography. Always one to stay on trend, Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara took to Instagram to join in the celebratory spirit by sharing her recent breast cancer screening in front of a mammogram machine with the caption, “You have to do it!!!”

Even though a mammogram isn’t the most fun, it can detect breast cancer up to two years before the tumor can be felt. Women ages 40–45 or older are recommended to have yearly screening mammograms to identify breast abnormalities as early as possible. Some of Vergara’s followers applauded the star for sharing the intimate moment and encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.
One commenter by the name of ziamarina57 echoed the importance of early screenings and said, “Have your mammograms regularly, do not put them off. My cancer was detected via mammogram, I had NO LUMP, this past May, it was at Stage 1, very early stage and very treatable.”
