Eyelash extensions have become much more popular in the last few years, and for good reason. The short procedure gives you natural-looking, voluminous lashes that wake up your eyes and shave a little time off of your beauty routine. When Perth, Australia lash artist Emma Dhanjal saw a new client looking for a touch-up on her extensions, though, she couldn’t fulfill the request. The client’s previous lashes had not only clumped up and fallen out in bits, but also infected her eyelids, leaving them red and inflamed. Dhanjal posted the incident on her Facebook, showing her removal of the client’s previously infected extensions that left her with just a few short, wispy natural lashes that are barely visible against a white cotton pad. This client’s mistake isn’t representative of the eyelash extension process as a whole. It shows, instead, the danger of having the procedure performed by someone who isn’t a licensed beauty technician (a certification is not the same thing). Furthermore, if your skin is prone to this type of irritation or you have allergies, you can ask your technician for a hypoallergenic glue when he or she applies your extensions, which is becoming available at more and more salons.

For the most part, said Dhanjal to Daily Mail, people shouldn’t be worried about getting eyelash extensions. If you go to a professional and take care of them properly, you can get extensions over and over with no harm done to your lids. Or, if you’re still too scared, you can opt for a more temporary enhancement like these magnetic fake lashes.
