The Latest Eyeliner Technique to Master Is Not for the Faint of Heart

If applying a thin coat of eyeliner on your waterline makes you tear up or full-on cringe, then it's safe to say the latest way to define your eyes, introduced by Danish makeup artist Sofie Petersen, isn't for you.
"Bling waterlining," as 18-year-old Petersen calls it, consists of placing a thin piece of jewelry just inside your waterline (instead of applying your usual liner on your waterline) to define it with an extra touch of glamour. Peterson told Allure that the trend came to her while she was trying to get out of a "creative rut." When looking for a way to recycle an old chain necklace, Petersen noticed that "the size and thickness were made for [her] waterline." When she placed the necklace on with extreme precision (seriously, practice extreme caution if you try this yourself), the trend was born.

But, that's not to say the jewel-inspired "liner" hasn't received any backlash. Petersen explains that while she knows the look isn't for everyone, she also hopes that artistry, not controversy, will continue to be at the center of her work. "I just don't understand how someone who doesn't know me at all can get so offended about something I put on my eye," she says. "My eye, my choices."
Fans continue to show concern on her Instagram photo, though, posting concerned comments like, "If you scratch that layer [of your eye] you could do permanent damage to your eyes and go blind," and, "You could scratch your eye and potentially cause an infection. Doesn't seem smart!"
We're all for artistic choices and continuing to find new ways to express yourself, but when it comes to placing foreign objects into our eyes with sharp tweezers, well, that's where we'll draw the line.
