We are in the eye of the storm known as award season, which means it’s go time for Hollywood’s most-called-upon skin care specialists. A-listers are getting red-carpet ready with the usual array of skin care and anti-aging treatments, like facials, lasers, fillers, skin-tightening procedures and sometimes even surgeries. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest go-to treatment that’s rippling through tinsel town is one you may already expect them to try, but not on their face.
Cupping, the ancient practice best known for being Goop-approved (Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan) and leaving its mark on the summer Olympics via Michael Phelps, has now made its way onto the faces of many elite actresses. Typically, cupping therapy uses heated glass cups placed on the skin to create a vacuum-like seal to mobilize blood flow and promote healing. Known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, cupping can also strengthen the immune system, aid in digestion and reduce stress.

According to skin care expert Jamie Sherill, she has been providing facial cupping to A-listers to help eliminate “any sign of a jowl and fight inflammation for a perfect profile or over-the-shoulder photo moment." She adds, "The facial muscles work as hard as the rest of the muscles, so facial cupping can help alleviate the effects of stress." Sherill prefers facial cupping for its anti-aging benefits, as it provides a youthful appearance without the worry of volume loss that can occur with a radio-frequency device or laser.
Another advocate for facial cupping is celebrity aesthetician Kat Radu, who considers the treatment a remedy for late night events like awards or festivals. Kate Beckinsale, a client of Radu, says, “Any facial treatment with Kat is like sending your face on vacation, finding it a boyfriend and buying it a really great dinner.”To see a live face cupping procedure performed by New York aesthetician Ildi Pekar, watch the video below:
