MAC’s New Lip Kits Just Took the Guesswork Out of Their Massive Lipstick Collection
Sure, “lip kits”—the idea of pairing a lipstick with a matching liner and marketing it as one product instead of two separate purchases—have been done before (brands like Tarte and Huda Beauty have dabbled into the concept) and the success of Kylie Cosmetics’ colorful Kits are unparalleled, but something that hasn’t been done before is using a set of Lip Kits to edit down a colossal arsenal of lipstick shades, like that of MAC Cosmetics’, in order to provide consumers with a handful of classic colors (with liners and sometimes glosses to match) that won’t go wrong and pair with every skin tone.
MAC just released seven Lip Kits ($29) that are only available online at Nordstrom and Macy's, which include a classic Lipstick (regularly $17) and Lip Pencil (regularly $17.50), in nude shades that are hand-picked to compliment any skin tone or preference. Though some lip kits have gained popularity for including the same shade in the lipstick and liner, MAC’s selections were crafted by the artists to perfectly flatter each other, meaning that some kits include the exact shades while others include similar hues to create a subtle contour effect (this will also make your pout appear more plump). The “Whirl” Kit is a beautiful dusty rose, “Honeylove” is a pinky beige, “Stone” is a gray-toned taupe, “Velvet Teddy” is a deep beige, “Boldly Bare” is a rose-toned brown, “Twig” is a satin brown pink and “Subculture” is a brown with pink undertones.

While the two-piece kits are available online at both Macy’s and Nordstrom, there are also three-piece Kits ($42.50) exclusively available on Nordstrom’s website that include both a Lipstick and Lip Pencil as well as a Retro Matte Liquid Lip Color (regularly $21) to enhance the look and lock in each set. Valued at $55.50, these Lipstick Kits are available in the brand’s cult-classic color waves: "Nude" (the Lipstick shade is “Yash”, the Liquid Lipcolor shade is “Lady-Be-Good” and the Pencil shade is “Subculture”), "Red" (the Lipstick shade is “MAC Red”, the Liquid Lipcolor is “Feels So Grand” and the Pencil shade is “Ruby Woo”) and "Pink" (the Lipstick shade is “Please Me”, the Liquid Lipcolor shade is “Divine-Divine” and the Pencil shade is “Edge to Edge”).
If you’re already a lipstick connoisseur and have these shades stockpiled in your vanity, don’t rule these kits out just yet—because they can save you anywhere from $5.50 on the two-piece kits and up to $13 on the three-piece offerings if you were trying to create the sets at your local MAC counter, it might not be a bad idea to add some to your cart before they sell out.
