Nestlé Has News That Will Make Chocoholics Happy

Sugar has been in the spotlight a lot recently and some experts have even said that consuming large amounts of sugar on a regular basis is as bad as smoking. 

It sounds like Nestlé (the makers of chocolate classics like Crunch bars, Butterfingers and Kit Kats) has been listening. The brand claims its scientists have used natural ingredients to alter the structure of sugar, making it dissolve quicker. Translation: Its candies won't need as much sugar in them because your brain will think they are equally as sweet.

According to a press release from Nestlé, the discovery will enable the brand to significantly decrease the total sugar in its confectionery products, while maintaining a very natural taste. “This truly groundbreaking research is inspired by nature and has the potential to reduce total sugar by up to 40 percent in our confectionery,” said Stefan Catsicas, chief technology officer for Nestlé. “Our scientists have discovered a completely new way to use a traditional, natural ingredient.”

The brand says it will begin using this new type of faster-dissolving sugar across a range of its products in 2018 and will provide more details about which products it will affect sometime next year.

However, Business Insider reports that this change might not be enough to make a measurable difference in our diets because most of the calories that Americans get from added sugar come from sweetened beverages like soda and processed, "grain-based" desserts like cakes and breads (rather than candy), according to the latest National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the CDC report that only about 6 percent of Americans' calories from added sugar come from candy.

Additionally, rumor has it the new sugar isn't designed to be mixed into sugary drinks or grain-based foods, so there's been much speculation as to whether or not this will actually affect our diets.
