It’s a dreaded day when your thirteen-year-old daughter asks you about birth control. Shock, horror and panic set in. “You can’t even drive and you want to have sex?!” Well, whatever your daughters’ libido might suggest, she may be asking for oral contraceptives for other reasons, researchers say.

According to a new report from the Guttmacher Institute, one in three teenagers aren’t using the pill to ward off an unwanted pregnancy. Instead, they use it to alleviate menstrual pain, regulate their periods, thwart migraines and treat acne.

And why not use it, especially if it can clear up your skin? Research shows birth control slows down overactive oil glands in the skin, thus helping to fight breakouts.

Teens aren’t the only ones finding new ways to use the pill either, the survey found some perimenopausal women take it to guide their path to menopause.

Have you, or do you ever use birth control for other reasons than preventing pregnancy?
