Icelandic skin care brand BioEffect has a theory about eye products: Serums, creams and the like work “OK” on their own; couple them with a hydrogel patch and you just made the formula much more powerful and much more possible for ingredients to get deeper into skin.
Call me a skeptic, but I wasn’t so sure—I’ll test just about every eye product out there and I am a big fan of eye patches, but doing the two steps just seemed like an unnecessary skin care move I didn’t have time for.

Until I came down with one of the worst colds of my life a few weeks ago. Besides the sore throat, coughing spells and stuffy nose that are par for the course, I also looked puffy and like I had taken a navy magic marker to the area under my eyes.
I pulled out the BioEffect EGF Eye Mask Treatment (approximately $75), remembering that it boasted of being able to help with pretty much every under-eye concern thanks to its patented ingredient of EGF, a plant-based growth factor. First I applied the serum, then the patch, which was like a magical cooling ice cube that instantly gave some relief to my sinuses. I left the patches on for five minutes or so, taking them off to reveal that I actually looked rested, more radiant and all-around a million times better. No under-eye puffiness, so much more hydration and pretty much a full-on reduction of the look of lines and wrinkles.
The good news? This serum-patch duo seriously works. The bad news? It isn’t available in the U.S. quite yet (rumor has it that it will be soon!), but you can purchase online at Harrods.
