So much has been said about all the reasons why adult acne seems to be on the rise, but for anyone who suffers from it, the only thing they really want to hear is a solution that works—and a list of instigators they should stay away from.
According to Stephanie Torres, aesthetician at The Spa at Delamar in Greenwich, CT, in her experience, there are three things that come up again and again as the biggest breakout culprits: hormones, stress and diet. So, besides trying to relax and completely rewiring your hormones, try these seven swaps and tips, all of which Torres says make the biggest difference in her clients’ skin:
Drink more water. “This is so easy and the number-one thing that can make a difference.”

Watch the GMOs—and anything high in sugar. “Processed foods are so high in sugar content, and there are so many hormones in dairy that can really do a number on your skin.”
Try to go organic. While it’s obviously not the easiest for food swaps, Torres says she sees a physical difference in the pores of her clients who eat organically—especially the ones who are completely vegan. “Their skin is gleaming and their pores are clearer and smaller. Their bodies don’t have to work as hard to eliminate all the processed stuff.”
Load up on fish. Because of the omegas, they are what give skin luminosity.
Have a side of broccoli. “This is a great food for skin clearing because it has vitamins A, B, C and K and antioxidants, and also fights against free-radical damage,” Torres says, adding that eating some brown rice with it is also great for skin.
Snack on nuts. Because they are loaded with zinc, they can actually fight blemish-causing bacteria, according to Torres.
Consider cutting back on coffee. Torres says that drinking too much coffee can bring a dullness to the skin because it results in a lack of oxygen coming to the surface.
