Quickly becoming the new “must-have” product among skincare fanatics, konjac sponges should be on everyone’s beauty shopping list.

This all-natural, super-exfoliator, is derived from the root fibers of the konjac plant, which is native to eastern Asia. The crom of the plant (also referred to as the yam) is actually used for various meals within Asian cuisine and is high in fiber, making it a popular diet food.

Why do we love it? The fibers form a squishy sponge (seen above), that is able to gently salve off dead skin and makeup, helping to eliminate blackheads and unclog pores. Additionally, it is naturally alkaline, which means it balances out the acidity of skin preventing breakouts. It also dries really quickly, so, the mold and mildew problems that plague washcloths are a non-issue here. Think of it as a washcloth that doesn’t need to go into the laundry every day.

To use, you first must let it soak in warm water until it’s twice its original size, this can take up to 15 minutes the first time. This step is incredibly important because the konjac sponge will be hard when you first take it out of the package and could damage skin. Then, wet your face and add cleanser directly to the sponge. Press the sponge between the palms of your hands to create a lather–twisting the sponge may cause damage so it’s best to just be gentle. As you cleanse, be mindful of the eye area or healing acne spots. After you’re done you rinse out the sponge and let it dry.

Look for the following sponges, they’re some of our favorites:

The best basic? Bosica’s Konjac Cleansing Sponge ($18), which is preservative-free.

Need to remove toxins out of your skin? Check out The Konjac Sponge Company’s Bamboo Charcoal Sponge ($9) that deeply cleanses your pores and eliminates acne causing-bacteria with the power of charcoal.

Smooth your skin while clearing away blackheads with the Cherry Blossom Konjac Puff ($12) made by the Japanese Konjac Sponge.
