If you want a light and fresh style for summer, take a cue from actress Ginnifer Goodwin who has been successfully sporting a low-maintenance short style. If you’re ready to try the look, ask your stylist for a versatile pixie cut that’s short, sexy, soft and feminine. Wavy and straight hair types will best be able to pull off this style. “Bring a lot of pictures for reference,” says celebrity stylist Anh Co Tran, who created Ginnifer’s cut.

“When it comes to this kind of hairstyle, confidence is extremely important,” says Tran. “You want to make sure that you go to a stylist who does short hair often and is experienced with cutting hair short. With a short style it’s all in the cut—it’s very different from cutting long hair.”

To achieve this style, first Tran divided the hair from top to bottom, going all the way from the front of the crown and around. Starting with the back, he made diagonal subsections and cut from the crown down to the neck and continued to the front. “Then I started from the back and continued to the other side of the front. This gave the hair movement and softness,” he explains. Hair is then divided in the middle and horizontal sections are taken from the crown to the front and cut short to long with a pivot point that should be repeated. After the hair is dried, Tran point-cut to texturize and shape the layers.

How to style it: Spiky and masculine or softer with a feminine touch to it. Tran says to use a light molding wax that is pliable. (We like René Furterer Modeling Paste ($24) because it lets you shape a short cut into any style for long-lasting hold that isn’t the least bit sticky, flaky or gummy.) “After you have the hair in place, spray it with a medium-hold hairspray but not with something that’s too hard. You want the hair to have movement so it looks youthful and fresh.” Try Sachajuan Medium Hold Hairspray ($28) to set your style sans flaking or dulling the hair or becoming sticky or too stiff.

Would you try a pixie cut this summer? Remember, you can always grow out short hair.
