A blepharoplasty patient may go into the operating room in search of aesthetic eyelid improvement, but she may leave with a brighter twinkle in her eye, so to speak. According to recent research, this kind of surgery has a positive impact on almost all patients’ quality of life.
Blepharoplasty typically involves the removal or redistribution of tissue that has become saggy with age, in an effort to correct droopy upper eyelids and bags under the eyes. Researchers selected 26 patients who had undergone bilateral upper and lower lid blepharoplasty for cosmetic purposes and administered a survey based on the Glasgow Benefit Inventory, which measures quality of life.
The researchers found that almost every patient reported an overall positive impact on their quality of life as a result of the surgery, including improved self-esteem.
Although it’s important to go into this and any kind of plastic surgery with realistic expectations about how it can and can’t change your life, this study shows that blepharoplasty can make a encouraging emotional impact on patients.
