The one struggle that all women seem to face when applying makeup is how to get a proper eyeliner application every time. Either the wings are uneven or the thickness is different and it can leave you lacking confidence. We spoke with makeup artists Stephanie Klasse of Mehron Makeup and Natalie Soto-Carlisle of Jane Iredale for their tricks to get that perfect eyeliner result every time.
Unique, But Effortless
“One of the most unique eyeliner tricks that I’ve ever heard was from makeup artist Wayne Goss,” says Klasse. “It involves applying a soft pencil eyeliner to the edge of your eyelash curler and then curling your eyelashes. The eyeliner will transfer to your eyelid while you are crimping your eyelashes.” For those less bold, Soto-Carlisle suggests takings your time and applying eyeliner with an open eye, which allows you to follow the natural shape of your eye.
Gel Eyeliner Is the Way to Go
When thinking of which product would be best to apply, gel eyeliner is the way to go. “A popular product that incorporates new long-wear technology is gel eyeliner,” says Soto-Carlisle. “With more hydrated formulas that stay in place longer and allow more flexibility in application, they’ve become the top choice of many artists, myself included.” If you are more prone to mistakes and want a softer start before moving to gel, using eye shadow as eyeliner can help.
“Eyeshadow is so easy to use, it won’t skip or dry out like other products can and application mistakes are a breeze to fix,” Klasse says. This method is the best for beginners, as it is easy to work over with gel or liquid eyeliner once you’re more comfortable with the skill.
Importance of Tools
A good brush can mean all the difference, especially with gel and liquid eyeliner. Although there are a variety to choose from, both Soto-Carlisle and Klasse advise using a small, flat, angled brush for this technique. Of course the best tool is often a lot of practice and finding the products and techniques that work best for you.
