One of the hottest beauty news items in the last few months was the arrival of a brand with an innovative way of getting affordable, high-quality products into the hands of beauty junkies everywhere. Founded by Marcia Kilgore, the beauty maven behind Bliss and Soap & Glory, Beauty Pie touts itself as a “Buyer’s Club for Beauty Addicts,” and I couldn’t agree more.
It works like this: In an effort to bring transparency to the beauty buying process, the digital brand cuts costs without having to change its formulas. In fact, Beauty Pie products are made in the same factories as many other luxury cosmetic brands. In order to eliminate the high markup costs associated with prestige brands, it keeps prices low with affordable, no-frills product packaging. As you shop on its site, you can see a breakdown underneath each product that details exactly how much packaging, warehousing and safety testing costs per item. Membership is $10 a month and allows you to pay $2, $3 and $4 for lipsticks, foundations, mascaras and more.

As I examined each of my new Beauty Pie products, I didn’t really have high expectations. Perhaps it was the minimalist packaging or maybe somewhere in my mind I thought it was all too good to be true. How “high-quality” can a $3 blush be? Could I really get NARS-quality cosmetics for NYX prices? The answer shouldn’t have surprised me considering the success of Kilgore’s previous brands. As I tried, tested and incorporated each product into my daily routine, I became more and more obsessed with each one.
One Powder Wonder—The Standout Star
$4 for Members/ $30 for Nonmembers
When I first opened this compact, I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. Is it a highlighter? Finishing powder? Well, it’s kind of both. After one or two uses I can’t imagine using another setting powder over my foundation. It’s microfine, translucent powder mattifies my skin and provides a radiant, flaw-blurring finish. On its own, this do-it-all powder is totally worth the price of the monthly membership and is now a permanent fixture in my makeup routine.
The Unbeatable Concealer—The Super Light Second Skin
$4 for Members/ $26 for Nonmembers
Everything about this concealer is what I’m always looking for in the concealers that end up disappointing me. It’s lightweight and buildable and doesn’t crease into fine lines and wrinkles. It’s specially formulated with moisturizing emollients that you can feel as you’re spreading it on your skin. It’s so velvety-smooth that it’s hard to believe when you’re applying it that it can cover imperfections as well as it does. Unlike other concealers I’ve tried, it doesn’t budge or fade. It actually stays on all day.
Smart Powder Blush—A Little Goes a Long Way
$3 for Members/ $25 for Nonmembers
I tried the Daydreamer shade and the color is as gorgeous on my skin as it is in the pan. What stands out the most about this blush is how highly pigmented, yet light it is. A gingerly swipe is all you need to give your cheeks long-lasting color.
Uber Volume-Boost Mascara—For Long-Wear Wow Lashes
$2 for Members/ $24 for Nonmembers
You have to love a mascara that gives volume and length to short lashes without clumping or smudging. You have to love it 20 times more when it costs less than your cup of coffee. This formula is a keeper!
FUTURELIPSTICK Matte—For a Smooth, Soft, Matte Finish
$2 for Members/ $25 for Nonmembers
This nondrying, super light lipstick is here to give the matte liquid lipstick craze a run for its money. It goes on smooth and somehow manages to hydrate while leaving a rich, matte finish. There are currently eight shades in the line, and I’m finding it very difficult to be content with owning just one.
For me, it’s a rarity to be impressed with every single product I try from one brand, but I keep reaching for my Beauty Pie goodies on a daily basis. The best part is, with ridiculously affordable prices, you can keep exploring and adding more products to your makeup collection for what you would normally pay for a tube of high-end lipstick, and that’s too good of a deal for a beauty addict like me to pass up.
