6 Bad Beauty Habits to Break Now

6 Bad Beauty Habits to Break Now featured image

Can the beauty rituals we swear by be doing more harm than good? We reached out to celebrity hair stylist Sarah Potempa and Artis founder and makeup artist Matthew Waitesmith to find out what bad beauty habits we’ve picked up that we should definitely break up with.

Shampooing the Ends of Hair

According to celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa, shampooing the ends of your hair can be much more damaging than we think. She explains that when we focus on shampooing the ends, it wears away and dries the outer later of our hair, called the cuticle. “Shampoo is designed to cleanse the scalp of oils and product build-up,” says Potempa, adding that when rinsed, the shampoo will slide through the ends to remove build-up without causing damage.

Conditioning the Roots of Your Hair

Sarah Potempa explains that while conditioner is designed to moisturize the hair, it can also quickly weigh down roots if applied too heavily. Instead, she recommends focusing on applying conditioner to the ends of your hair for luscious locks.

Using Cheap or Old Hair Tools

“When applying extreme heat to your hair, invest in a high quality iron with digital temperature clocks,” says Potempa, adding that the custom longer internal heaters, as well as the allowance to adjust the heat to your hair type, can help you preserve healthy hair longer.

Picking a Product Without Testing it First

According to makeup artist Matthew Waitesmith, testing out any makeup product before purchasing is crucial. Take eye shadow, for example— Waitesmith explains that often times when shades look vibrant and rich in the packaging, they just have neutral “filler” powder components in them, adding that the pigment you see in the pan may not transfer over to your skin well (or at all), and that you should test it out before you buy it.

Not Paying Attention to Expiration Dates

“Makeup can be a great place for microbes to grow if you don’t pay attention to keeping your products clean and fresh,” says Waitesmith. “No one wants to be putting on makeup that it harboring microbes that can irritate your skin,” he adds. Waitesmith recommends organizing your products—instead of throwing it all in a drawer—to give you a better sense of what is new and okay to use, and what’s been around for a while and should probably be tossed.

Overlooking Proper Applicators and Brushes

“Modern makeup can be very sophisticated in terms of the formula composition,” says Waitesmith. To get the best results, Waitesmith says it’s crucial to pair the right applicator with their matching formulas. “Learn more about the formulas you love, and then find out which brushes and bristles will pick up and deliver those formulas the best on your skin.” He says, and we agree, that you’ll be surprised at how much better your makeup looks when applied with the proper brushes!
