Sure, you can deal with it during the winter-when you don’t have to show much skin, but as soon as the sun starts to shine brightly during the summer, it’s all you can think about: back acne. It’s a loathsome skin affliction that happens to be very common and can be hard to treat.

So if you’re searching for ways to rid yourself of it, first keep in mind that there are ways to prevent body acne, like avoiding ingredients that clog pores such as mineral oils or heavy moisturizers. And even cutting out sugar or dairy from your diet could help, since acne can be a sign of an internal problem.

Another tip-keep your skin hydrated. “By doing so, your back will learn to produce less oil and the skin will not congest as easily or quickly,” says Faye Gattis, an aesthetician at Thibiant Spa in Beverly Hills, CA.

And if you happen to be athletic, it’s important to shower after a major sweat-fest. “Make sure to rinse off directly after working out,” says Sophia Marzocchi, owner and aesthetician at Spa Sophia in Venica, CA. “We all know how easy it is to grab a bite first or go run an errand [after exercising], but some people are actually allergic to their own sweat and you can see the break out along the lines of their jogging bra.” Gattis says to also, “Use an antibacterial body wash or face cleanser for the back.” One to try is Thibiant Puractive Smooth Cleansing Gel ($26).

For those prone to breakouts on the body, Marzocchi says it’s beneficial to get a back facial once a month that includes steaming, scrubbing, a peel if necessary, along with a detox and an antibacterial mud mask. It helps to clear the skin, and as she points out, “you can’t reach your own back to get those annoying blackheads and its not the sexiest thing to ask your partner to do it for you.”

If you’re looking for more intense cleansing, Gattis says microdermabrasion can also go a long way. “It gives a deeper exfoliation to remove bacteria, while stimulating new cells for a fresher, brighter and more clear complexion.”
