As U.S. insurance companies continue to sit on the fence about paying for weight-loss surgery, Australia is moving towards a government-funded lap-band program.
Australia’s obesity rate rivals that of America, and related illnesses have put strain on the country’s public health system. With this proposed plan, the money for lap-band surgery-which helps patients feel full after a small amount of food-would come out of taxes.
Parliament recently heard evidence of the surgery’s ability to help patients lose up to 60% of their body weight; their decision is expected this week.
