Interpreting astrology is usually reserved for, well, astrologists, so when I learned that a perfumer was doing it for the launch of Strange Invisible Perfumes Astrological Fragrances, my inner skeptic went on high alert.
Is it possible to translate the characteristics of an astrology sign into a scent? I could be overanalyzing, a trait that is synonymous with my sign, Virgo, which incidentally is the first fragrance of the line to launch just in time for Virgo birthdays starting in late August. But being the perfectionist I am (also a Virgo trait), I expect them to nail it. Virgos are down to earth and also an earth sign so I was pleased to see notes of baked earth and sandalwood included in the mix, which is brightened with notes of neroli, temple mandarin and rose. I have yet to actually smell the fragrance, but what if I don’t like it? Does that mean I’m not really a Virgo? Relief came from the perfume’s creator.
“We all have more than one sign,” says Strange Invisible Perfumes founder Alexandra Balahoutis. “I think there is an overt and fascinating correlation between the layers of constellations within a person’s natal chart and the defining layers of a perfume composition. This is why I encourage people to wear the astrological perfume they most admire, rather than feeling limited to their sun sign. They can be layered as well.”
Ok. So we’ll see what happens-or smell it in this case.
